Process

Next, we process the cylinders at one of our warehouses.

They are weighed, tested to measure global warming potential, and consolidated into larger tanks. The empty cylinders are vacuumed out and returned to technicians for re-use.

Destroy

Finally, the gases are safely and permanently destroyed at a partner facility.

The biggest question around offsets is additionality: how much less CO2 is in the atmosphere as a result of your purchase? For too many offsets, the answer is murky at best. This is why forestry and renewable energy credits have become so controversial — many buyers won't touch these offsets. Newer technologies like direct air capture and enhanced weathering are promising, but are too expensive for most buyers, face scientific questions about permanence and life-cycle, and not ready for scale-up.

Many offsetting approaches rely on storing carbon for decades, often in an 'open system' like a forest or the ocean. This leads to scientific uncertainty about how long the carbon stays there before being re-released into the atmosphere. Even when the science is clear, measuring and verifying this carbon storage is challenging and leads to long-term risks around reversals.
